The Importance of Proper Oil Maintenance in Your Diesel Engine

When you use a vehicle or a piece of equipment that contains a diesel-powered engine, it is very important to routinely change the oil. Engine oil lubricates, protects, and cools the many parts of your diesel engine. Letting your engine oil get too low or dirty could result in mechanical troubles and decrease the life of the engine.

There are several reasons why routine oil changes are vital for preserving the performance of your diesel engine.

  • Lubrication. Imagine all the moving parts, valves, pistons, and other engine parts moving at high rates of speed under the hood of the vehicle. These components create heat and will wear down the engine dramatically without proper oil lubrication. Make sure to refer to the owner’s manual to see what specific weight and grade of oil the vehicle requires and ensure it is kept at the recommended fill volume.
  • Cooling. Moving parts that lack proper lubrication create friction, which in turn may cause the parts or even the engine to over-heat. Maintaining clean and sufficient amounts of oil is the perfect solution to prevent too much friction.
  • Corrosion Prevention. Dirt and other particles are harmful to engines. Over time, dirt can cause major corrosion and decrease the life of an engine. Clean oil and filters help remove harmful particles and debris to keep your engine running at peak performance.
  • Longevity. Routine maintenance makes a vehicle last longer. Buildup from dirt deprives a vehicle’s fuel economy and power and makes the internal components work harder. An engine that works too hard will end up having further difficulties and a shorter life span.
